Five Questions with Manheim Specialty’s National Heavy Truck & Equipment Manager, Amanda Kent.
While Heavy Truck & Equipment inventory is tight across the sector, we sat down with Amanda Kent— a 15-year veteran of the industry— to talk about what’s hot in the industry and what dealers should be looking out for when they show up at auctions.
Q1: How long have you been involved in the remarketing industry and what led you here?
A: I started at Manheim Georgia (which was Atlanta Auto Auction West back then) in the fall of 1995 as a Ford Coordinator. I was looking for a full-time job that would lead into a career, and I was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time as the industry was just starting to take off with all the new technologies. Thinking back to my first year, I ne
ver would have guessed that the industry would be where it is tod ay with the use of Simulcast, online auctions like OVE.com and mobile tools.
Q2: What’s the most powerful trend affecting the Heavy Truck & Equipment industry that dealers should b e aware of right now?
A: Emissions laws are changing the whole face of thi s industry. Late last year, The California Air Resources Board (CARB) announced that diesel particulate matter emissions will be reduced from today's levels by 50 percent by 2014 and 70 percent by 2020. With the economy where it is, regulators are giving operators a little more time to come into compliance with new, stricter emissions standards for heavy trucks than originally planned. This means that dealers have some time to liquidate existing inventory before having to stock-up on more efficient vehicles. But, dealers and business owners should start preparing now to become more environmentally conscious in the years ahead.
Q3: What’s one thing dealers should know before attending an auction?
A: The most important thing a customer should know before attending an auction is the “Auction Terms & Conditions.” All auctions are generally the same, but the terms and conditions can be very different. Click here for Manheim Heavy Truck and Equipment’s terms and conditions.
Q4: What’s the most exciting unit you saw pass through the lanes at Manheim in the last year?
A: Well, I can’t say that there was one unit in particular that caught my eye, but I was very impressed at the 127 units that ran through the lanes at Manheim Arizona’s first Heavy Truck & Equipment sale in November 2010. Starting a new sale in that market was chancy, but they pulled it off. They’ve also continued to grow that sale in the Arizona market.
Q5: What do you predict buyers and sellers will experience in the next 3-6 months in the Heavy Truck & Equipment segments?
A: Buyers will experience what they are experiencing now: There’s not enough inventory and purchase prices are up, so they’ll have to continue to dig deep into their pockets to buy units. Sellers have little to no inventories because they’ve worked through the back up from 2007-2009. The great news, though, is sellers are making 15 to 20 percent more on units sold because of the shortage of inventory.
