Long-Term Car Video: 2012 Mini Cooper S Coupe At The Sno*Drift Rally

When we first got our long-term Mini Cooper S Coupe, our editors spent one week behind the wheel, familiarizing themselves with the new two-seater. Impressions were generally positive, as we each applauded the handling and power of the car, along with some of its other idiosyncrasies.

Rumors: Industry Report?More Than Meets The Eye With The RB8?

In the hyper-meticulous world of Formula 1 racing, rules and regulations are adhered to with near fanatical levels of fastidiousness. Any time a manufacturer unveils a new piece of technology or aerodynamic innovation, they face intense scrutiny to make sure they aren't creating an unfair advantage the other cars on the grid. Such is the case with Red Bull Racing's 2012 F1 car, the RB8?specifically, the air inlet on the car's "stepped" nose.

Geneva show debut for five-door Skoda Citigo

Skoda has announced that its five-door Citigo supermini will be formally unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

The five-door version of the tiny Citigo comes just a week after the five-door Volkswagen Up was revealed. This means that news of the five-door SEAT Mii is not far away.

Engines on offer will remain the same in the five-door as the three-door model. Two are initially on offer, either a 60bhp or 75bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Later a 68.9mpg and 96g/km Green tec variant will launch.

The Citigo will launch in mid-2012.

SUV Driver Narrowly Escapes Injuries in Houston, Texas 18-Wheeler Accident

The driver of an SUV narrowly escaped injuries in an 18-wheeler accident when a container on the back of a truck struck an overpass, came loose, and fell on the SUV.

The driver of the SUV escaped injuries only because the container landed on the passenger side of the SUV; the right side of the vehicle was completely destroyed. The container, a portable galley, was apparently being transported from Louisiana to Brownsville. General Marine Leasing, the company that owns the container, said this is the second time an incident like this has happened with their containers as they were being transported across the country by the trucking company, Dynasty Trucking. The general procedure before trucks begin their cross country journeys includes:

  • reporting the height of the cargo to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)
  • transportation officials then provide the company with a route that will allow the 18-wheeler to move safely along the highway without damaging the container or endangering other drivers

There is no information yet on whether Dynasty Trucking followed standard procedures in this case, although officials believe the driver was likely off route.

Truck Accident LawyerMeanwhile, the woman who miraculously escaped injuries, Zoma Ramirez, is undergoing a CT scan to rule out the presence of internal injuries after the accident. The fact that Dynasty Trucking had a similar accident before does not speak well of the company's operating procedures. A complete investigation will reveal more about procedure violations at the company that could have contributed to the 18 wheeler-accident.

Truck Accident Claims

A trucking company can be held liable for injuries sustained in a truck accident. An experienced truck accident lawyer will conduct a thorough investigation of the company's record to look for any similar prior violations and to identify whether or not the driver has a poor driving history.

If you have been injured in an 18-wheeler accident and have questions about the trucking company's liability, contact an 18-wheeler accident lawyer at Arnold & Itkin LLP for a free consultation.

Vauxhall makes a small Mokka

Vauxhall has sensationally unveiled a brand new Nissan Juke rival, called Mokka.

The tiny SUV is just a little bigger than the Juke, but will finally give the Nissan a direct rival when it goes on sale towards the end of 2012. Ford is also planning to join the B-segment SUV pack at about the same time, with the Fiesta-based EcoSport.

This is built on Corsa underpinnings, which you could probably have assumed from the looks – the front end is pure Corsa, while in general it's like a shrunken Vauxhall Antara, unsurprisingly.

And, in fact, that's what Vauxhall sees it as, because the Mokka has been endowed with proper off-road capability. It'll be no Land Rover, but 4×4 versions will go on sale, providing four-wheel traction thanks to a clever clutch that sends torque to the rear wheels when needed.

The majority of the time the car will operate in front-wheel drive mode to conserve fuel, and most Mokkas sold will be front-wheel drive only.

Engine choice will be limited to three from the off: a 1.6-litre petrol unit with 113bhp; a 1.4-litre turbo petrol with 138bhp; and a 128bhp 1.7-litre CDTI diesel unit. No economy or emissions figures yet.

All cars will come with hill descent control and hill start assist as standard, bolstering their off road credentials, and technology on the options list includes camera that recognise road signs, lane departure warning and a front impact detection system.

Vauxhall hasn't said how much the high-riding Mokka will cost, but we're expecting a starting price in the region of £15,000. For that price, the interior – yet to be unveiled – is likely to mimic the Corsa in design but be built with better materials.

The boot is, with the rear seats folded down, significantly larger than the Juke's: 1,372 litres compared to just 830 in the Nissan. We're not told what the standard capacity is.

The Mokka is due to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

The Hot List: Volume 25

Every week we sift through a truly amazing amount of ?stuff? in the dozen or so hours we spend online?you know, the time spent not driving sweet cars. A lot of the cool stuff we find has to do specifically with new cars, naturally, but there?s also a huge amount of awesomeness that doesn?t completely fit in the normal Winding Road world. Once, we were in the habit of simply reading, watching, or talking amongst ourselves about this web detritus, but recently we thought it might be a good idea to start sharing it with you all. Thus, The Hot List.

Don?t Let Record Heavy Truck Order Backlogs Cost You Money

Trying to upgrade your equipment right now? Good luck.

According to Americas Commercial Transportation Research Co. (ACT), Class 8 commercial vehicle orders continue to heavily outstrip supply.  In fact, the backlog of orders now is at 5 months, passing 126,000 units at the end of April.  That makes it quite challenging to update your high-mileage semi, let alone an entire fleet.

Don’t Let Record Heavy Truck Order Backlogs Cost You Money
We all know that old equipment is a huge financial risk and drain on profits, never mind about lost time and revenue due to repair downtime.  In fact, according a recent article in Fleet Owner, “fleets unable to replace aging trucks can see their cost-per-mile triple.”

We’re in the auction business at Manheim Specialty, so obviously our solution is to consider a late-model used truck or trailer in lieu of a tough-to-get new unit.  But, self-serving as it sounds, buying a quality used unit at a reputable wholesale auction is an easy and smart alternative with a long list of benefits.

In addition to a regular schedule of heavy truck and equipment auctions at physical locations, dealers can bid and buy at every-other-Thursday Thunder online sales events, or anytime at www.ove.com, Manheim Specialty’s 24/7 bid or buy now wholesale marketplace.  There’s never an inventory shortage online – a quick search for Class 8 trucks offered for sale on May 25 offered up 268 choices for buyers, from Ford 450s to Freightliner semis.

Not a dealer? Not a problem: You’re invited to preview inventory and buy from select Manheim locations via the Auction Locator page.  Don’t tackle the surging demand for transport services with aging equipment – expand your search for new wheels with a wholesale auction.

Truck Accident Lawyers from Arnold & Itkin LLP File Suit on Behalf of Man Struck by a Commercial Truck

Truck accident lawyers Kurt Arnold and Paul Skrabanek filed suit on behalf of a man struck by a commercial truck owned by a steel company. The plaintiff was driving near Brookshire, Texas when the truck driver made an illegal turn and struck the plaintiff head on. The incident required that the plaintiff be airlifted from the scene and ultimately required that he have five screws implanted in his severely injured legs. Unfortunately, the plaintiff also suffered injuries to his chest and lungs. The suit is pending in Harris County, Texas.

Vacation Home Rentals Are Not Traditional Home Rentals

It seems obvious, and yet many people don't really consider all the differences when renting a vacation property versus a traditional home rental. This is true of the home itself and of the entire process as well. The nature of the vacation rental process is entirely different all the way through.

First of all, a vacation home in Las Vegas has to be near the Strip. As the main draw in Vegas, the Strip is the place most people want to visit when they come here. So whereas a traditional renter might be fine with being 20 minutes from the Bellagio, a vacation renter wants to be as close as reasonably possible. They are planning on making several trips to miracle mile during their stay, so they do not want to drive too far.

Additionally, the home most provide as "hotel like" readiness. This means that all the lights and power are on as well as the cable TV and Internet access. The home must have a private pool and preferably a spa, as well as a room that can be called a "game room". Ideal homes have bathrooms connected to every bedroom, and also give the guest feeling of privacy and exclusivity.

None of these things are important to a traditional renter. Even if they are looking for a furnished home, they are likely showing up with more than a suitcase full of clothes and ready to sign on for all the utilities. This is not at all the same customer and not at all the same market. Traditional renters are not travelers. Plain and simple.

This is why Las Vegas Retreats specializes in servicing the vacation rental and corporate housing markets. The customers who come to us want to know that our homes are ready to use, have all the features to make for a great vacation, and are located close to almost everything they want to see and do in Las Vegas. That's exactly what we provide, and that is exactly what our customers get.

There are plenty of good real estate companies in Las Vegas who represent excellent rental homes of almost every type and price. And none of them provides 24 hour customer service. None of them has a cleaning crew to perform a top to bottom cleaning between every guest. None of them acclimatizes homes or heats the pool for incoming guests, or makes sure that everything is working the way it is supposed to.

Of course we are biased. But it's mostly from operating the business for so long and discovering all the differences for ourselves. When you are looking for a great vacation home rental that actually is one, call Las Vegas Retreats. It is our business!

Trucking Drives Top Tunes and Flicks through the Decades

A Look at How the Trucking Industry Is Influencing Culture

manheim heavy truck wholesale auctionAs History Channel’s “Ice Road Truckers” celebrates its fifth season, the media continues to take a more focused look at the culture that personifies the trucking world.

While this newfound popularity appears somewhat surprising, trucking has been portrayed in film, on television and, most notably, in music since the day that trucks first took to the highway.

Over the decades, memorable trucking tunes have streamed across airwaves and turntables nationwide.  For some, this first began as kids, singing “Wheels on the Truck.”

As we grew, our musical tastes became a bit more “sophisticated,” thanks to the CB craze of the 70s, which gave us “Convoy” by one-hit wonder C.B. McCall.  The astounding success of that hit ultimately led to the similarly named 1978 film starring Kris Kristofferson and Ali McGraw.

owner and operators wholesale truck and equipment auctions

The 70s offered a full tank of trucker-themed music, including the Grateful Dead’s “Truckin’” and the soulful and inspiring “Keep on Truckin’” by former Temptations lead singer Eddie Kendricks.  “Keep on Truckin’” had a huge cultural impact, reaching #1 on the Billboard Charts in 1973 and becoming a popular American phrase.

Trucking also made its way to the top of the TV ratings in the 70s when Greg Evigan and his pet chimpanzee took to the interstate in a Kenworth K-100 cab-over semi in NBC’s “B.J. and the Bear.”

The comedic realm was not untouched by the trucking industry as the comedic song “18 Wheels on a Big Rig” by Heywood Banks became one of his most popular sketches.

Trucking has recently found its way into the political arena—through song.  In 2008, trucking anthem “When the Big Rigs Don’t Roll” gained national attention during the famous trucking fuel protest convoy to Washington, D.C. Performed by country singer John Johnson, the song has since been played at many other trucking rallies nationwide.

Today, trucker tunes continue to grow in popularity and now have a dedicated channel on satellite radio, “Road Dog Trucking.” On the small screen, Spike’s “PowerBlock TV” has earned a dedicated following of passionate trucking enthusiasts.

From film to television to music, the trucking world continues to captivate.  What are your favorites? Please share your top trucking tune or flick with our community in the comment section below!

Truck Buyers on the Hunt for Fresh Used Inventory

Rising Demand, Aging Fleets, High Fuel Prices Keep Truck Buyers on the Hunt for Fresh Used Inventory

Whether you’re an independent owner/operator or commercial truck fleet manager, keeping profit margins healthy isn’t getting any easier despite positive industry signals. As the first quarter concludes, the outlook for our industry continues to be very strong, as mentioned in last week’s report from the NTEA show

Rising demand is also driving hiring: payroll at for-hire trucking companies was 40,000 jobs higher than in March 2010 according to the Commercial Carrier Journal.

manheim heavy truck auctionsHowever, all that good news is still being tempered by the squeeze on the bottom line thanks to rising fuel costs. The national average price for on-highway diesel increased 2.5 cents to $3.932 a gallon during the week ending March 28, according to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA). According to agency data, the price of diesel is now more than 99 cents above the same week a year ago and nearly 98 cents higher than the level in late September when the current surge began.

With operating costs on the rise, aging fleets and new production still recovering (and with some manufacturers now suffering another setback from the Japan crisis and resulting parts challenges), getting quality used inventory continues to be a top priority. We’re here to help.

If you’re looking to upgrade your equipment, be it a Class 3 to 6 Medium duty or Class 7 and 8 Heavy duty truck, start your search at an upcoming Manheim Specialty sale, like our twice-monthly Thursday Thunder online sales. To preview upcoming sales, check out the calendar today. Owner/operators are invited to join our sales online via Proxibid.

Whitewright - December, 2011

December 18, 2011

I got a late start on the breakfast ride.  Had to put another part in Debbie's car...  One would think that the Germans would figure out how to build parts to keep working, the way they make their vehicles handle so well...

Missed the 9:00 start in McKinney, and tried to follow Bo's route to the best of my memory without the GPS route loaded.  I rolled into Whitewright at 10:00, and there was just a few bikes parked.  But, just as I pulled off my jacket, Bo rolled in with the major pack of the club.  We all got settled, and walked across the main street of Whitewright to CJ's, for a tasty, warm breakfast.  Another nice morning of socializing with the riding partners.  It's been another good year.  Merry Christmas.

Return of Heavy Truck Sale to Metro Atlanta Draws Record Results

metro atlanta heavy truck auction in the lane resized 600Dealers and private business owners from around the country gathered Wednesday, Feb. 16 to celebrate the grand re-opening of Manheim Metro Atlanta’s Heavy Truck & Equipment sale . More than 60 dealers attended in the lanes and another 100 buyers joined via Simulcast or Proxibid. Overall, more than 60 percent of the available inventory was sold, including 23 percent to Proxibid buyers – an all-time high for Manheim sales.

“The sales at Manheim Metro Atlanta are always top-caliber auction events, and this was no exception,” said Amanda Kent, national heavy truck and equipment manager, Manheim Heavy Truck & Equipment. “The buzz on the floor was all about how pleased customers were with the seamless operations, the friendly and helpful staff, and the impressive variety of inventory.”

metro atlanta heavy truck auction resized 600Despite the scarce inventory available in the market, Manheim Metro Atlanta successfully secured a wide variety of inventory ranging from road trackers, utility bucket trucks and over the roads to box trucks, moving vans and stake bodies. There were also two pieces of equipment and multiple trailers, including a flatbed equipment trailer, car hauler and dry box.

“We have sellers from this week’s sale already reserving units to bring next month,” added Kent. “So, we’re expecting the same level of variety and high-quality units in March.”

Manheim Metro Atlanta will host Heavy Truck & Equipment sales the third Wednesday of every month. The next sale will be on Wednesday, March 16 at 9:30 a.m.

International Motorcycle Show, Dallas - 2011

December 3, 2011

The weather is lousy for riding motorcycles right now, so we might as well find some place to go stare at motorcycles.  The IMS is in Dallas this weekend.  The show is getting smaller and less elaborate each year, likely an indication of the state of economy.  BMW has been absent from the IMS for at least a couple of years, and that is disappointing.  And the Ducati booth is really small in comparison to the last couple of years, but at least they are at the show.  It's still entertaining, and yet another place to run into my riding partners from the Lone Star BMW Riders.

The much smaller Ducati booth, but the bikes and the booth staff still look good.

Keith is an exhibitor this year with his Quad on display.  Wendy is doing a good job in support.

Keith was like a groupie while taking to Mr. Daytona, Scott Russell

Fred, trying out a Harley ride on the dyno.

Lots of custom bikes on display.

Maybe Rick Fairless can do a custom build around my K12RS.
