Winding Road Video: 2012 Chrysler 300 SRT8

Powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8, Chrysler?s new 300 SRT8 is, to put it simply, a beast. There?s no better way of illustrating that fact than by taking it out for a few acceleration runs on the wet roads around the Winding Road offices.

The Guide to Family Friendly Las Vegas

For many people coming to Las Vegas, there is the additional headache of what to do with the kids when you are here. Around the world, this is known as an adult Disneyland, not the one that was made for families. And yet over the years Las Vegas has worked to broaden its appeal to a wider market that includes families with children of all ages.

Since the original boom times of the 50's and 60's, Las Vegas has always been a place where adults came to be adults. Much of that included leaving the kids back home, and having a little R and R that included gambling and drinking and maybe some smoking too.

Oh, who are we kidding??? Everybody smoked back then! But these days parents are looking for a different Las Vegas. One that is more suitable for the whole family. They can find it too!

Where to Look for Las Vegas For Kids?

By looking at sites like VegasVacationVillage.com, parents can now easily find the best options for lodging, entertainment and adventures in Las Vegas and know right away what to do with their families.

We established this great website a few years ago to make it easier for our customers to discover more about the kid side of Las Vegas. Now it is better than ever, with all new information and "Kid Ratings" too, so parents can see right away what is most suitable for their families.

VegasVacationVillage.com is a great website guide, showing all the latest kid shows, destinations, ratings and opinions on just about all the major attractions for children and kids in Las Vegas. It also sports information on some of the lessor known destinations in and near to Las Vegas that many visitors might otherwise have no idea at all about. Be sure to stop by and check out this great website before you make your next family vacation to Las Vegas.

As always, Happy Travels from Las Vegas Retreats!

Ford Fiesta SUV to debut in Delhi

Ford is set to release a Fiesta SUV concept at the New Delhi Auto Show in January.

The car, set to tease a production model that will take on the likes of the Nissan Juke and possibly the MINI Countryman, will be first revealed at the show in January. 1.4 million people are expected to attend.

Ford is planning to use the SUV to expand its presence in India, where it will be launched as the second vehicle in an eight model line up.

The car is expected to enter production at the tail end of 2012 and sales will begin in 2013. There will be a four wheel drive model offered but front wheel drive is expected to take the lion’s share of sales.

Ford’s new three-cylinder Ecoboost engine will likely be the engine of choice, though a diesel option will also be available.

No-Plan Ride and the Dike Store

October 3, 2011

It was a nice day, I had time to take off work, so, a short ride sounded good to me.  I slept in on Monday, and lazied my way out to the garage to get my gear on.  I had no plan on where to go, but the shortest way out of town was through Wylie and out Hwy 78.  As I headed east to Caddo Mills, I actually started trying to plan where to go.  There was a good mexican food spot in Cooper, where I had enjoyed a chicken torta before.  That sounded good.  Wow, a plan, of sorts...  By the time I reached Cooper, Jalapeno's was closed.  Darn.  Gotta form another plan now.  I started riding towards Sulphur Springs to find a burger spot.  Got on the phone for a 1:00 conference call to wrap up a equipment interface project.  It went well, as did the project, so I was off of the phone soon.  I looked at the GPS, and saw a bonus waypoint from a few years back, the Dike Store.

I inserted it in the route, and pulled up to the very eclectic bump in the road.  Carol said she would cook up a burger for me, and I grabbed a bag of chips and a bottle of tea, and sat down at the cedar plank bar.  It was plenty quiet at the store - only me.

Back on the road again to enjoy the 85-degree sunny ride back home.  Stopped by the lake for a short time for a stretch, and made my way back to the casa.  Not a bad plan for a no-plan ride...

Flip This Car: Archive

We love Christopher Smith?s way with words, with old cars, and with the combination of the two. Flip This Car is a series that Chris has been writing, and we?ve all been enjoying for quiet some time now. With a brand new installment of FTC just starting, and many more sure to be headed our way over upcoming months and years, we wanted to make sure that the total FTC saga had a permanent home here on Winding Road. Be sure to bookmark this page if you?re as big a car-flipping fan as we are, and we?ll be sure to update it just as often as new content becomes available. Got questions, ideas, or cars to buy/sell for Mr. Smith? Be sure to write all in the comments section below. (Including, but not limited to, any and all lovable but barely streetable pieces of near-crap that you may want to see Flipped!)

Quick Drive: 2012 Mercedes-Benz S550

The 550 is sort of in the sweet spot of the S-Class lineup. All the other ones are either smart on their fuel consumption, or are insanely powerful. If you?re a meat-and-potatoes kind of person, this is the model for you. It has plenty of power, but it feels perfectly relaxed and effortless under normal driving.

Excavator Viral Videos Tested by MythBusters

Excavator manheim heavy truck auctionsAs my husband and I were catching up on our TiVo’d shows, our trusty friends at MythBusters decided to investigate a few viral videos involving excavators to see if the videos were a hoax or not. Click here to read my previous blog about a MythBusters episode on whether or not motorcycles are a “greener” alternative to cars.

On this latest MythBusters episode, Adam and Jamie investigate three viral videos involving an excavator to see if the tricks are plausible or not.

WARNING: DO NOT TRY ANY OF THESE AT HOME!

The first excavator viral video showed “rowing” a barge using the boom and bucket of the excavator. It took some well choreographed, synchronized maneuvering by Adam and Jamie, but it worked and they moved the barge pretty well through the river (despite some strong currents working against them). Myth confirmed - it is possible to “row” a barge using excavators.

The second excavator viral video myth tested whether or not you could wakeboard with an excavator. The video shows a water skier, but Adam and Jamie used a wakeboard to test the myth. The excavator’s boom and bucket turned 360 degrees with a wake boarder attached to see if it was really possible to wakeboard with an excavator. It took a few tries to get the angle and speed of the boom right, but the myth was confirmed and it is possible to wakeboard with an excavator! Click here to see some of the MythBusters excavator wakeboarding footage.

The last excavator viral video looked at whether or not an excavator could load itself into the back of a dump truck. It took them a while, but (with the guidance of a heavy equipment expert) Adam and Jamie successfully loaded the excavator onto the dump truck.  Another myth confirmed by the MythBusters!

Have you seen any other interesting viral videos involving heavy equipment that make you scratch your head and wonder if the stunt is possible?

Kelly Miller is the Director of Business Analytics at Manheim Specialty.

Vegas From A Different Perspective

Those of us who live in Las Vegas all know the secret, that living in Las Vegas is absolutely amazing. And for myself, it was several years worth of visits to the city and never missing a chance to ask the question "How do you like living here?". After several hundred "Like and/or love it!" to only one "Hate it!", it became somewhat obvious that the place was a good choice.

That is one of the main reasons why we love our business. We love introducing visitors to the other side of our phenomenal home, Las Vegas. We know that once you discover how great it is to have a fabulous home near equally fabulous entertainment options of every kind, you too will make the discovery. You truly can have it all in Las Vegas!

What do we mean by that? We mean that with a Las Vegas vacation rental home you have privacy and security for your family, business, or just you and your friends, as well as the excitement of the Las Vegas Strip just minutes away. Once you discover that you can lounge in the pool and BBQ until your ready to go see Barry Manilow, who's show is a mere 10 minute drive awat, direct to the FREE valet parking, you will love it!

Even after the show, you'll discover that unlike your home in L.A. or San Francisco, you can be back at the house in no time at all. No traffic jams and no crowded avenues to worry about. In fact, you'll probably notice that you still have enough time to express yourself with the slot machines for awhile and still make it home in time to hop in the pool again before settling down to watch a movie.

Now, doesn't that sound better than a hotel room? Doesn't that make much more sense? To spend the same amount of money for an incredible home that you would just to sit on the edge of the bed to watch TV in your hotel room?

Okay, we'll give the Strip Hotels their due. If' you can't stand not having the casino right down stairs, you wont like staying in a Las Vegas vacation rental. They don't have Slots in them. Oh, and the lights out from don't blink all the time like they do on the Strip. But, we're not judging. To each their own!

If you've never stayed in the vacation rental in Las Vegas, you simply don't know that you''re missing. And you're missing a lot! Consider the differences on just these topics alone...
  • Eating - You're food versus their restaurants all the time.
  • Privacy - Zero privacy versus total privacy.
  • Space - 800sq ft versus 3000 sqft or more!
  • Pool - Shared with hundreds of people versus just you and your family or friends.
  • Gaming - Very costly and smoke filled versus your own free game room and pool table.
  • Environment - Clean and quiet versus smoky, alcohol smelling and intentionally noisy.
There is even more than this to consider, but really it all comes down to the experience you will have versus the one you imagine you'll have.

We hope to see you soon!

Las Vegas Retreats Gets An "A" Upgrade From The Better Business Bureau

It's taken five years now, but the BBB has finally removed that pesky "A-" from our profile and gave us the full-fledged "A" rating. Now, at first that might not seem like a big deal. But the truth is that in order to get an A rating with the BBB, you must maintain a perfect record for at least 5 years. That means that we have successfully maintained a perfect record since the day we first signed up.

We take pride in the accomplishment. To us the rating means customers agree that we provide excellent customer service. Although it may not be known to the greater public, Las Vegas Retreats has watched many "competitors" come and go in the last five years. They hide behind new identities in order to mask a history of poor customer service. In the mean time, we have spent our time growing into a mature company, with the same name and owners, that values its customers and does what it takes to have and keep a good reputation.

Since we opened our office on the Strip last year, some competitors have chosen to open P.O. boxes across the street from us. They list these mail drops as their "office" in order to appear like Las Vegas Retreats. They don't realize that the reason we open an office was for our customers. It is located so that visitors can come and see us in person, and have a real crew of people accountable to them.

We don't blame them really. We're a tough act to follow. We wouldn't want to have to compete with us either! But we're not in this for the short term gain. We love what we do and plan to keep doing it for the long term. We want you to know that we appreciate your business. It means everything to us that our customers get at least what you have paid for. We will continue to work hard to gain and keep your trust, and to provide you with the best vacation rental experience possible in Las Vegas.

Windom Feed Sack

October 30, 2011

Jim can find the most bizarre way to get somewhere, and that's what makes his rides interesting.  Today was a jaunt out through the back roads to Windom to have an early lunch buffet at the Feed Sack.  The temperature early was a bit chilly, but warmed into very comfortable 60's very quickly.  The buffet at the Feed Sack was awesome, with a great variety of country foods, and all very well prepared.

Thanks, Jim, for getting me on some new roads I have not ridden, and getting me very stuffed for lunch.

Guest Assurance Is Important, Especially For International Travelers

When we make reservations at a hotel like the Bellagio or Venetian, we know that we're going to be taken care of well on arrival. Things will be just as we expect them to be, and everything will be as advertised. And these are reasonable expectations, and in fact they are exactly what will happen to the vast majority of guests at those places. But vacation home rentals are not the Bellagio or the Venetian, and the typical rental is not operated to those standards.

That's where we are different than most vacation rental companies in Las Vegas. We run our homes with the utmost of professionalism and attention to detail. We aren't trying to the like the Venetian, but we want our guests to feel confident and relaxed in knowing that we are doing our best to provide the good service they expect. We want our guests to enjoy their stay and not give a second thought to the home, the same way they don't give a second thought to their hotel room.

We love what we do for a living. Being in the vacation and travel business in Las Vegas is truly a fun job. People come from all over the world to visit us in Las Vegas. To many people it is like visiting the Land of Oz.

We want our customers to rave about our town and to rave about their vacation home. This is our primary goal all the time, including when it is not in our favor. We're looking for long term success, not short term gain.

We often rant about other companies in this blog. And it's true, we don't think they take this business as seriously as we do. But that's only because the evidence is all over the place, and we know that companies tend to act the way the act, good or bad, as a pattern. If they misrepresent up front, they're going to misrepresent ongoing. Whether it's calling their P.O. Box an "office" or trying to tell you that BBB accreditation a "liability", that's just the way it is. They hide from the truth and we hope you don't fall for it.

As always, be careful when you choose who to book a vacation home with. And if you are traveling internationally, there is no need to ruin your global travel when good and reliable Las Vegas holiday villas are available. Be extra careful to check the easy to find Internet references first.

Travel safely and have fun!

Focus on Fleets: Let?s Talk about NAFA

manheim heavy truck auctions amanda kent talks about the NAFA fleet showThe North American Fleet Association (NAFA) Institute & Expo was April 9-12, 2011 in Charlotte, North Carolina. This was Manheim’s third year at the event; however it was Amanda Kent’s 6th visit, and Michelle Stowers’ first year in attendance. We caught up with them to get their take on the show, the industry and Manheim’s fleet management business outlook.

Q1. Who are the primary attendees of the NAFA Institute & Expo, and why do they attend?

AK: Fleet is usually considered institutional sellers and buyers, but the NAFA audience was probably 99% sellers. We primarily saw government entities – cities, states and DOTs - and large distributors in attendance. On the trade floor, it was generally other fleet industry affiliates like Manheim, as well as financial services providers, manufacturers, logistics companies and other organizations the meet the fleet management needs.

MS: In comparison to other shows I’ve been to like the Work Truck Show, this show was a very different type of event with a very different audience. NAFA provides numerous education programs for fleet professionals to become certified fleet managers. These classes are definitely what bring most people to the event. Because this show is very focused on education, it was very informative and refreshing.

Q2: How would you describe the general atmosphere of the event? How was morale this year?

MS: Everyone seems cautiously optimistic. We heard that attendance was up this year and that’s always a good indicator that the industry is moving in a positive direction.

AK: It’s true: nobody was singing the blues like in previous years. The economy is still having a huge impact on trade cycles. Many people we spoke to mentioned they’re keeping fleet units longer – it’s going from 4 to 6 years to more like 6 to 8 years. That has a ripple effect across our entire industry.

While nobody’s really closer to it, they can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Inventories have run out, so fleet managers are starting to buy new units. Prices - both in fuel and vehicles - are rising, but in general everyone did seem encouraged.

Q3: Speaking of inventory, how is Manheim’s fleet inventory?

AK: Manheim’s inventory is down a little in the fleet category compared to last year. It’s harder to find inventories across the board.  We’ve become more aggressive to ensure our products and customer service are top notch, so we continue to stay ahead of our competitors. We’re also forging a strong market in Canada, where next month we’re opening truck sales to the public at Manheim Toronto.

Q4: Beyond exhibiting at NAFA, how else was Manheim involved in the event?

AK: Manheim’s chief economist, Tom Webb, spoke about the state of the economy. Several attendees came by our booth after his presentation to remark about how insightful he was.

MS: Tom compiles a monthly Used Vehicle Value Index and a bi-annual Used Car Market Report.  He’s a great speaker with a strong grasp on what’s going on in the industry on a macro level; people always love to attend his sessions.

Q5: What would you say was a key take-away from the event?

AK: Attendance seemed to be up, and people were walking around with a purpose. That’s a good indicator of recovery!

Amanda Kent is Manheim's National Heavy Truck & Equipment Manager. A 15-year auction veteran, Amanda has been with Manheim Heavy Truck & Equipment Auctions for two years.

Michelle Stowers is Manheim’s Inside Sales Rep for Heavy Truck & Equipment. She has been with Manheim for three and a half years. An 18-year auction veteran, Michelle started on the auto side of the business and recently joined the Heavy Truck and Equipment division.
