Vauxhall has sensationally unveiled a brand new Nissan Juke rival, called Mokka.
The tiny SUV is just a little bigger than the Juke, but will finally give the Nissan a direct rival when it goes on sale towards the end of 2012. Ford is also planning to join the B-segment SUV pack at about the same time, with the Fiesta-based EcoSport.
This is built on Corsa underpinnings, which you could probably have assumed from the looks – the front end is pure Corsa, while in general it's like a shrunken Vauxhall Antara, unsurprisingly.
And, in fact, that's what Vauxhall sees it as, because the Mokka has been endowed with proper off-road capability. It'll be no Land Rover, but 4×4 versions will go on sale, providing four-wheel traction thanks to a clever clutch that sends torque to the rear wheels when needed.
The majority of the time the car will operate in front-wheel drive mode to conserve fuel, and most Mokkas sold will be front-wheel drive only.
Engine choice will be limited to three from the off: a 1.6-litre petrol unit with 113bhp; a 1.4-litre turbo petrol with 138bhp; and a 128bhp 1.7-litre CDTI diesel unit. No economy or emissions figures yet.
All cars will come with hill descent control and hill start assist as standard, bolstering their off road credentials, and technology on the options list includes camera that recognise road signs, lane departure warning and a front impact detection system.
Vauxhall hasn't said how much the high-riding Mokka will cost, but we're expecting a starting price in the region of £15,000. For that price, the interior – yet to be unveiled – is likely to mimic the Corsa in design but be built with better materials.
The boot is, with the rear seats folded down, significantly larger than the Juke's: 1,372 litres compared to just 830 in the Nissan. We're not told what the standard capacity is.
The Mokka is due to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
